The Peritz Scheinberg Cerebral Vascular Disease
Research Laboratory (CVDRL)

About Our Lab

The objective of the Cerebral Vascular Disease Research Laboratory is to conduct coordinated investigations into the pathophysiology, treatment, and prevention of cerebral ischemia. Our approach rests upon three important assumptions:

1

An understanding of the mechanisms of brain injury necessitates familiarity with the normal physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology of the central nervous system

2

Efforts to improve the prophylaxis and therapy of stroke should be based upon knowledge of disease mechanisms, and this is best acquired through studies in physiologically controlled experimental animal models

3

The probability of success in this complex problem-area is enhanced by bringing a variety of complementary multidisciplinary investigative strategies to bear on the problems under study

The Peritz Scheinberg Cerebral Vascular Disease Research Laboratories at the University of Miami were established more than 55 years ago by Dr. Peritz Scheinberg, the founding Chairman of the Department of Neurology. Our laboratories have a long history of research on studies of cerebral circulatory control mechanisms in animal models which have evolved over the years into studying cerebral ischemia from molecular biology to physiology and behavioral testing with the goal of finding novel therapies. Since the times of Dr. Scheinberg, some of the most famous investigators in the field have worked in our center (O.M. Reinmut, Raul Busto, Urban Ponten,  Myron D. Ginsberg, W. Dalton Dietrich,  Brant D. Watson, Mordecai Y.-T. Globus, Myron Rosenthal, Thomas J. Sick, Weizhao Zhao, Ludmila Belayev, Rainald Schmidt-Kastner, and Bingren Hu). In ensuing years, numerous scientists joined the Department of Neurology and the Scheinberg's laboratories to pursue studies of cerebral ischemia and brain metabolism and many trainees have come to train in our facilities.

The Peritz Scheinberg's Cerebrovascular
Disease Research Laboratory

The laboratory is dedicated in honor of Dr. Peritz Scheinberg’s role as first chairman of the Department of Neurology, for his establishment of a world class Department at the University of Miami and for his contributions to Neuroscience Research in Cerebrovascular Disease. In 2008, Dr. Chantal D’Adesky Scheinberg made a gift to the Department of Neurology to establish The Peritz Scheinberg's Cerebrovascular Disease Research Laboratory.

What We Aim For &
Who Can Help

Our laboratories are constantly in search of novel findings, where we wish to expand the knowledge on cerebrovascular disorders with an aim to treat and enhance the quality of life of others. Our laboratories have a long tradition of being highly collaborative and also of training highly successful postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students into our laboratories.
